Lewis & team working hard for turnaround in Chicago

JOLIET, Ill. – Following a career season in 2008, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Brandon Lewis and his family’s TigerFlow Systems sponsored team are working hard to turn their fortunes around for this weekend’s United Association Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago.  Lewis and Crew Chief Joe Monden plan to make changes to the engine combination to see if the car will respond favorably this weekend.

Lewis, 24, of Broken Arrow, Okla., switched to a brand new Joe Monden built chassis over the offseason.  That change coupled with a NHRA mandated change to 94% nitro from 96% last year has the team working hard to find the right combination.

“We’re trying a different motor combination this weekend,” said Lewis.  “We’re backing some things down to see if we can keep the car from being on the jagged edge all the time.  Every time we try to push the tune-up a little bit, it smokes the tires.  It’s like it has to be dog lazy or it smokes the tires; there seems to be no in between.

“Last weekend in Topeka, we had to run [Mike] Manners the first round,” Lewis continued.  “We knew he was probably good for a mid .30, so we tried to put just a little more timing in it early to see if we could pick it up.  It smoked the tires again.  So this weekend we’re going to try a combination we were going to try earlier in the year but just never got around to it.”

Despite starting the year well below the team’s expectations, Lewis remains optimistic for the remainder of the year.

“We have a great team and a great group of sponsors behind us,” stated Lewis.  “The way we look at it, we still have enough time to make a good year out of it.  Hopefully we can get TigerFlow, Morrison Construction, Lucas Oil, Unifirst, A-1 Auto Body and Ringers Gloves back in the winner’s circle soon.”

Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars, followed by one final session on Saturday.  Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
